A lot of money is invested in improving the way we do business, with the best of intentions, as I know companies don’t invest thousands – millions of dollars each year in system & process improvements in the hope they will fail. Yet that is what’s happening. Did you know 65% – 80% of technology projects either partially or fully fail! Up to 30% of profit can be lost due to inefficient processes.
You will know how much that is worth to your company. When projects fail, when processes are not embedded in the ‘ways of working’ then apathy towards change sets in, a disconnect can form between those doing and those decisioning. If change is not sustainably implemented then you won’t be making the savings you wanted to make and you are more likely to spend more money reworking the change post-delivery, hiring more staff, adding or replacing systems to try and solve the failed delivery problem.
What if there was a way to improve those odds, what if there was a way to invite staff to be more involved, to be more transparent without fear of recourse, to make informed decisions which help lead to better outcomes? The great news is there is a way. This is where I can help you.
I’ll start by sharing what I see as the 5 key elements to change success:
- Understand the problem – identify the root cause of the problem, validate your assumptions, be open to challenge and make sure current state is documented & well known.
- Identify the benefits of solving the problem – take the time to really explore what success looks like, be clear of what that is, check point to ensure that the progress you are making is achieving those goals, if you are not have the courage to stop, pause, reflect, discover, pivot, and then restart.
- Planning – be realistic, ensure the delivery date is achievable & not merely driven by a want, look at the amount of change you are doing, who you expect to sponsor it and take the less is more approach. Ensure you have full commitment from all levels to contribute to the success of the change and include planning how this will impact business as usual (BAU) activities.
- Communication – gather ideas from all corners, ask explorative questions, listen to understand (without judgement or prejudice), be transparent and lead by example. Once you have done this check point findings against your goals & planning, make changes to these as necessary. Then establish and execute a two-way communication strategy that encourages honest feedback.
- Implementation – take the time to see the change through the staff & customers eyes and ensure your implementation plan meets their needs, ensure aligned cross team delivery planning (that’s project & BAU teams), go live only when goals are achieved, provide clear, transparent, relevant communication, and ensure there is sufficient training and ongoing support.
